When I look around our school at this time of year, I see many students handing things in late in an attempt to save their grades. Usually in our school, the saying ” Better late than never,” holds up. But, I recently heard two stories that show that this is in NOT true in college.
My niece attends Fordham University at Lincoln Center. She had a Politics paper due on a Monday. The teacher e mailed the class and said that she would not be in on Monday, but they were to hand their papers in to her secretary. The class was scheduled for 8:30 am. Since there was no class, my niece decided to sleep in. She eventually went to the professor’s office at 2:30 pm and handed her paper in. On Wednesday the teacher returned and told the students that those students who handed in their papers after 12:30 would receive a grade of ZERO! My niece was devastated. She e mailed the teacher. She tried to talk to her after class. She met with her during her office hours. The teacher said that her paper was good, but she still got a ZERO!
My friend’s son attends Loyola University in Maryland. When he was late handing in a Psychology paper, he told the professor that he had to go back to his dorm and e mail her the paper. Actually, he went back to the dorm and wrote the paper on the school computer. What he did not know was that school computers time stamp the papers when they are being used. The teacher confronted him, knowing that the paper had been written after he had made his excuse. The teacher gave him a ZERO. She accused him of cheating ; brought him up on charges; and tried to get him kicked out of school.
THESE STORIES ARE TRUE AND TOLD TO ME IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS.
