A PHS Drama Student Perspective on the Seussical experience
by Stephanie Gil, PHS Junior
Seussical the spring musical to be presented at Peekskill High School April 15-17 is a newer musical than some classics, but contains all the humor, danger, love, excitement, and hum-along tunes as the old musicals. It is a show which mixes together all of the Dr. Seuss classics such as Green Eggs and Ham, and the Cat in the Hat, Horton Hatches the Egg and less well-known stories, such as Gertrude McFuzz (with her one-feather tail) and McElligot’s Pool. Characters like “The Wickersham Brothers” and little “JoJo” from Horton Hears a Who are much more integral and significant in this show. Regardless of the number of copies sold, all of Dr. Seuss’ stories have a vibrant, child-like, humorous, and even intellectual level that translates well to the stage.
The students at Peekskill High School are putting on this amazing show and adding their own unique twist to characters and set-design. What may this twist be? Well, as a member of the drama club, and as I also portray Gertrude McFuzz, my cast would probably “break my leg” if I told you, although possibly in the literal not the theatrical sense! However, I will say that we have chosen to integrate thirty-five lovely children from the district’s elementary and middle schools to truly liven up this great show. With 35 little rascals around, and only two weeks remaining before curtain, the preparation time is winding down, but that makes it all the more exciting.
On a personal note, I have been a part of this Drama Club for three years now, and the students the club welcomes, as well as the director and technical director have all worked together to make the club an experience truly worth coming to every day.
If you would like to view an evening of exciting stage music, dance, love and enthusiasm, and support our ever growing club, please come see what Peekskill students can do!
