Want to know what it’s really like to drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs? Students had the chance to find out during lunch periods on April 29th. Student Assistance League Counselor, Kristen D’Anna, arranged for the Peekskill Police Department Officers Pam Sgroi and Leo Dylewski to bring their simulator car and goggles to our school. According to Officer Sgroi, ” The goggles cause visual distortion that makes it seem like you’re under the influence. It makes it hard to focus on what you need to do.”
More than 50 students with a driver’s permit or license were allowed to drive the course while wearing the goggles. Mia DeMuro was one of them. According to DeMuro, “I didn’t even notice that I was hitting anything. I thought I was driving good but I wasn’t. Then when I tried to brake, I couldn’t find the pedal. I learned a lot from this. I will never drive under the influence after this experience.”
