Freshman Cynthia Sanchez has wrestled for both the Varsity and Modified Wrestling teams this year. As far as we know, Cynthia is PHS’s first female wrestler and, as of press time, she was on her way to State Sectionals.
“People don’t believe I’m a wrestler because I don’t look like a wrestler,” said Cynthia.
According to Coach Travis, Cynthia is indeed a wrestler and a good one. He describes her as “very willing” and said that “Cynthia brings a lot of energy to the team.”
Cynthia got into wrestling after studying Judo for two years. She said that she had to stop Judo because her Judo instructor left the country; she started wrestling in order to stay in shape. Cynthia said that she has met a lot of new people through wrestling and seemed a bit surprised that she is gaing a reputation. “People who I don’t even know come up to me and say, ‘Hi’,” said Cynthia.
Cynthia said that the hardest thing about wrestling was that sometimes she has to wrestle against some very strong boys. “I’ve only wrestled one other girl,” she said. Cynthia enjoys the feeling that she gets when she wins a difficult match.
Summing it up, Cynthia stated, “Having confidence in yourself—you’ll always end up on top.”
Here’s to Great Words, Great Work, and Great Wrestling.
