The college fair, held Wednesday, in the school’s cafeteria was in my opnion, very productive. Presenters from the different schools were there to provide valuable information for potential students and others who were generally interested in learning about college life. According to a Manhatanville representaive, the purpose was to give information about colleges, possible areas of interest, resources for applications and open house dates. I had the chance to ask a few questions and the variety of the types of schools was amazing. For example, I asked Harvard University about their fiancial aide programs and found out that they are completley need-based and award no merit or athletic schoalrships. Smaller schools, such as Concordia, which has only eight hundred students, has a ton of schoalrships to choose from, inlcudiong everything from leadership to being a girl/boy scout. Carreer based schools like the College of Westchester and Lincoln Technical Institute are focused on helping students get hired as soon as possible after their graduation or helping them transfer to a different school for higher degrees. Campuses are another aspect of choosing the right college. St. John’s is a large university located near an urban setting, but still has a small school and suburban atomsphere. Westchester Community College’s main campus is in Valhalla, New York, but offers plenty of extension sites for student convinence. Whatever you were looking for, the college fair was definelty useful and hopefully it succeeded in its purpose of educating students about their choices for higher education.
