After sweating through Regents for 145 years, some New York students may be off the hook. State officials are considering doing away with 13 of the 17 existing exams. It is estimated that these cuts could save the State almost 14 million dollars. The Regents exams under consideration for elimination are: 2 of the 3 Math tests, 3 of the 4 Science tests, both Social Studies tests, and all foreign language exams.
Is this an 11th Grader’s dream or will it really happen? Of course, most teachers and educators are rallying against the cuts, saying that they doubt that such drastic cuts would be , “politically feasible”. The State, for its part, is saying that while they are seeking new sources of cash to avoid cuts, dwindling financial support may leave them no choice but to cut out the exams.
It is not known if the proposed cancellations will effect this school year or next, so for now students should continue with their studies and stay tuned for the final outcome.
