Grammy winner Paquito D’Rivera, along with PHS musicians, performed at the Paramount on May 22nd. The PHS Jazz ensemble opened the concert with three songs. “Sissy Strut” by the Meters: Miles Parks (Alto Sax solo). The second song was “Steppin’ On The Good Foot” by James Brown: Micheal Snell (Trumpet solo) and Charlie Dinota (Guitar solo). The third song was “Cantaloupe Island” by Herbie Hancock: Brett Travis (Tenor Sax solo). The last song was “Chucho” by Paquito D’Rivera. He played with us on this song. Mr Hahn (Trombone solo), Vertis McMillan (Piano solo), Diego (Trumpet solo) and Paquito (Alto Sax solo). Diego was with Paquito’s band and he sat in with us on “Chucho”. This was a great experience for the trumpet players. Because of last minute illnesses and scheduling problems the entire trumpet section was comprised of 9th grade students. Kudos to them and my colleagues Mr. Devine and Mr. Thomas for preparing these students so well throughout the years. Also, the audience included not only band parents, but people who came to see Paquito. This gave us a broader exposure than usual. After the Jazz Band finished playing, we were treated to a wonderful concert by Paquito’s Band. Again, many thanks go to the Paramount Theater for another great collaboration.
