Peekskill, N.Y. — Peekskill started its march toward history on Friday.
The Lady Red Devils, who are in search of the program’s first-ever sectional title, hit the championship-chasing trail in style, jumping out to an 18-0 lead en route to a 61-27 victory over No. 17-seeded Walter Panas in the opening round of the Section 1 Class A playoffs.
Peekskill will host on No. 8-seeded Somers in the quarterfinals on Feb. 22 at 5 p.m.
After losing in last year’s sectional championship, Peekskill won’t be satisfied with just “getting there.” As a result, there’s a palpable sense of urgency floating around the team.
“There’s a lot of pressure,” Peekskill coach Rodney Headley said. “If we don’t get (the sectional title) now, it will be awhile before we get back to where we need to be.”
Junior guard Asia Jackson certainly looked like player on a mission, scoring 10 of her 14 points directly off steals that led to fast-break layups. Jackson, who totaled seven steals, was shark-like on defense — deadly and sleek.
The Panthers, meanwhile, were left stranded in open water.
According to Headley, Jackson’s blend of hard-nose defense is a model the team lives by.
“Defense is the only thing that’s going to keep us alive,” he said. “It’s the only constant thing. Offensively, you never know what we are going to get. Even though we have a lot of girls that can score, sometimes we will come out on nights and not hit. Defense is never going to drop off. We are coming up with a bunch of steals because girls have committed themselves defensively, which is leading to points.”
Jazmin Garcia proved Peekskill’s has some pretty good talent on offense, too. The senior forward showcased her entire repertoire en route to a game-high 18 points. She did work on the perimeter (one 3-pointer) and in the paint.
“(Garcia) started out as a forward, but she plays down in the Bronx with the Gauchos in the summertime,” Headley said. “They already have big girls down there, so she’s forced to play outside. That’s why she has that inside-outside game.”
Peekskill (17-1) — the No. 3-ranked Class A team in NYS Class A — suffered its lone loss to NYC powerhouse Bergtraum.
Headley doesn’t expect to hit another roadblock along the way.
“Our thing is to take it one step at a time,” he said, “but deep down inside we should end up playing on top.”
