JULIANNE’S HUDSON VALLEY GIRLS BASKETBALL RANKINGS: 1/25/11
1. Peekskill (11-1): The Lady Red Devils remain on top. There’s no team with a starting line-up as strong as Peekskills. This week, the Red Devils let out no steam, toppling Walter Panas, 59-29. Tasia Nolan, Asia Jackson and Jazmin Garcia are a trio that has yet to be contained.
2. Carmel (11-1): The Rams came into this week flying high off their tremendous win over Ossining last week. They brought their fervor into their performance again, defeating Somers 55-40 this week. The solid guard-play of Carmel allows for a tough inside game to arise from Georgetown bound-Brittany Horne; making them one of the most complete teams in Section 1.
3. Irvington (11-1): The Bulldogs still only have one loss this season and that was to Peekskill. They are continuing to pull out victories despite the loss of star guard Brittni Lai to an ankle injury. This week Irvington held off Ardsley, 45-37. Without Lai, their games are sure to be closer. But a win is a win and the Bulldogs are taking advantage of the time off to get healthy.
4. Ossining (12-2): The Pride quickly recharged their batteries after last week’s loss to Carmel. This week they rolled over Sleepy Hollow, scoring 90 points in the victory. One thing you can be sure of is that Ossining knows how to put points on the board. Any team preparing to play them must have a strong defensive strategy to stop star guard Saniya Chong, who continues to pour in 30-plus points per game.
5. Albertus Magnus (13-0): The undefeated Falcons continue on their undefeated path after having no trouble toppling Nyack and Nanuet this week. Among many things that make Magnus tough is its balanced on both the offensive and defensive end. The target is boldly on the Falcons’ back as every team gears up to hand them their first loss.
6. Pearl River (12-1): The Pirates bounced back after their first loss of the season last week to Albertus Magnus. They had two convincing victories over Nanuet and Spring Valley as of late. Junior guard Christa Scognamiglio continues to pour in the buckets, scoring 19 and 18 in her two performances.
7. Monroe Woodbury (9-0): The Crusaders have yet to lose a game. Besides Warwick, there isn’t a team in Section 9 that has really hung with them. Senior forward Danielle Waldron is a force down low for this squad, averaging 11 points and 5 rebounds per contest.
8. Ursuline (10-3): Ursuline had a good week beating Mount Vernon, 71-61, for its 10th straight win. Caroline Spillane, Alyssa Lawrence, Nicole Robinson and Ariana Apostolopoulus are quite the quartet as each scored in double-figures against Mount Vernon.
9. Warwick (11-1): What puts Warwick below Monroe-Woodbury among the Section 9 teams is its loss to Kingston. In the pre-season polls, the Wildcats were picked by most to be in front of the Crusaders. The two of these teams are by far the top contenders in Section 9 and will likely meet head to head in early February.
10. Arlington (12-1): The Admirals deserve a spot in the rankings because they just keep winning. Their only loss was to Peekskill in mid-December. They recently beat John Jay-EF by a small margin, 43-39. They look ahead to play Lourdes on Friday as the Warriors seek to venge their four point loss to them a week ago.
In the Mix: Tappan Zee (10-2); Horace Greeley (10-3), Briarcliff (9-3), Rye (6-2), Mount Vernon (7-5), Scarsdale (6-5
