Nia Adams was injured during the May 7th softball game against Croton. The good news is that Peekskill won 13 – 7. The bad news is what happened to Nia. This is how she explains it, and also how she views her future in sports.
MERCURY: What was your injury, what caused it, and how did you feel about what happened to you?
NIA: I slid into 3rd base and one of the girls from the other team tried to throw me out. I was safe but the ball hit me in my leg. At first I just thought it was a regular bruise until I got home from the game. I was walking into the house and I collapsed in mid-step. I was in complete shock because I didn’t know what was going on. I was scared and I called my mom, screaming, telling her that I need to go to the hospital. It took about 20 minutes for me to get off the floor and into the car. I waited about 15-20 minutes in the Emergency room to get looked at, and then they wheel-chaired me to my own room where I waited 20 minutes to get x-rayed and looked at. After they took my x-ray I found out I have a hematoma contusion. Which is an area or trauma and bleeding under my skin. Its a very big blood clot which affects me being able to walk, I can’t play Softball for about 2-3 weeks and I’m on bed rest for a few days.
MERCURY: Are you still pleased to have been on the team even though you were injured?
NIA: I’m very pleased to be on Peekskill Girls Varsity Softball team. We’ve accomplished a lot this year and we’ve proven a lot of people wrong, we’ve even proved ourselves wrong. Just because I can’t play physically doesn’t mean I won’t be able to be part of the team mentally and emotionally. I’m here to give support to my team, and remind them to keep their heads up, and to remain a team. One person doesn’t make a team, a team makes a team.
MERCURY: Do you plan to play sports in the future?
NIA: I want to continue playing sports in college. I plan on playing softball and volleyball in college. I’ve been playing softball since I was a child, it’s my passion and I love it. Volleyball I started a little later in my life, when I was 13 years old, and I also enjoy it but I like softball more.
Mercury wishes fast healing to Nia and a great season to the Girls Softball Team!
