On Thursday May 26th, Peekskill High School held its 8th annual Science Symposium. In addition to a presentation of over 80 research projects, the night honored those in the Science National Honor Society and this year’s inductees.

Immersive Student Learning

This study aims to investigate the difference in the information retained while watching educational videos on a planetarium dome and on a flat screen. Previous studies indicate that the more areas of the brain that are stimulated by incoming information, the more dendrite-neural connections are increased and strengthened, and the more interconnections across information in permanent memory are formed (Willis,2007). The interactive nature of the dome should keep students engaged longer thus allowing them to retain more information from the video, than while watching on a flat screen. This study will attempt to show that students retain more information while watching videos on a dome screen. This study will compare about 180 earth science students. All subjects will complete a pretest prior to watching the video and a test after watching the video. The results will be based on the grades of these tests. The results should indicate that students retain more information from the dome screen video. These results will offer a possible way to improve student learning.
