Over the past week I interviewed a few staff members of the guidance team and security department at Peekskill High School. I asked them questions about their personality, colleges they attended, their favorite sport teams, and long term goals for Peekskill High School.

Mr. Boyd is one of many security guards at Peekskill High School. Mr. Boyd was born in North Carolina but moved to Peekskill as a young kid. He attended the Peekskill City Schools and graduated from PHS in 1978. His main goal growing up was to become a police officer. After High School Mr. Boyd went on to become a police officer. He then led a full career as a police officer in the City of Peekskill for over 23 years. After retiring, Mr. Boyd became a security guard at PHS where he has worked ever since. Outside of work, he enjoys working with cars. He enjoys basketball, football and baseball. His favorite teams are the New York Knicks, New York Giants and New York Yankees.

Troy is another security guard here at Peekskill High School. This is his first year at PHS. However, before coming to the High School, he worked at the middle school as a security guard. Troy was born and raised in New Orleans. His main goals growing up were to finish school and go to college. His favorite thing about Peekskill High School is coaching modified football and the boy’s junior varsity basketball team. He enjoys riding his motorcycle and spending time with his children outside of work. Troy’s favorite sport is football and his favorite team is the New Orleans Saints.

Ms. Wells is also new to our school this year. Ms. Wells is a guidance counselor. She attended Mount Saint Mary’s College for her undergraduate degree and then Long Island University for her masters degree. Ms. Wells states that the best thing about her job is interacting with the students. Ms. Wells feels the guidance department is strong this year because they work well together and the administrators are very supportive.

Mr. Cabassa is the chairperson of the PHS guidance department. He attended City College in New York and decided to become a guidance counselor because he enjoys working with people. He also states that his father is a family therapist and his mother is a social worker. Mr. Cabassa said the best thing about his job is working with the students and their parents to help them towards their goals.

Ms. Martinez is also a new school guidance counselor at Peekskill High School. She attended Cornell University and graduated in 2009. Ms. Martinez said the best thing about her job is having direct impact on change she enjoys having one on one contact with students and making sure they are able to graduate. Ms. Martinez said she looks forward to know the students and being a part of the Peekskill community which she knows holds a lot of pride. Ms. Martinez was asked “How do you like Peekskill High School so far?” she replied “It’s been great so far everyone has been warm and welcoming.” Ms. Martinez became a guidance counselor because she comes from a family of educators and she enjoys the psychology of it. She also states that she didn’t have a strong relationship with her guidance counselor so she thought it would be cool to work with students at different levels.
