What Is A Brony?

Just reading this title, I know most of you skipped this article thinking “Boy, that sounds queer!” But for those very few who took the time to read this, I say “Thank you.”  Many have heard of a My Little Pony controversy and wondered whether it was homosexual or just plain unusual. Well, I’m here to not only answer those questions you dare not ask any other soul and to, hopefully, get you to accept these fan’s unique interests.
What is a brony?
Many have probably heard the term amongst others or even online. In the Urban Dictionary, a Brony is categorized as a name typically given to the male viewers/fans (whether they are straight, gay, bisexual, etc.) of the My Little Pony show or franchise. Females also take a certain liking to the show as well but are called Pegasisters. Strange, isn’t it? Be that as it may, these fans enjoy this social status and take great pride in carrying it out. The fans assemble conventions in big cities like San Francisco, Seattle, California and even New York!
What is My Little Pony?
For those who haven’t even seen the commercials or merchandise at your local store, My Little Pony is a 4th generation tv show that stars 6 main characters who learn about the power of friendship. They all live in a place called Ponyville which is one of the many cities in Equestria. Equestria is ruled by a princess known as Princess Celestia who is in charge of rising and setting the sun. Her sister, Princess Luna, is in charge of raising and setting the moon. So, back to the stars of the show. These 6 main characters are Twilight Sparkle(a purple unicorn pony that bears somewhat of a star on her hip. She is a book worm), Fluttershy(a yellow Pegasus pony that has 3 pink butterflies on her hip. She is really shy and takes care of all the animals in Ponyville), Rainbow Dash(an adventurous blue Pegasus that has a cloud with a rainbow lightning bolt who trains her hardest to be part of the best Pegasus flight crew, the wonderbolts), Apple Jack(a southern orange earth pony who has 3 red apples on her hip and works hard for her family), Pinky Pie(a super hyper, party hard pink earth pony that has 3 balloons on her hip and enjoys making other ponies smile) and lastly, Rarity(a white fashion crazed unicorn pony who loves making dresses for everyone).
Why would anyone watch this?
Well, everyone has different interests. Some people like Drake, some people like Sons of Anarchy and there are ones that take a liking to something more sensitive and less judgmental. The fans of My Little Pony are drawn to something that anyone else would like a specific artist, movie or show. These people enjoy them for different reasons. It may be the characters, the plot of the show, the voice actors, or even watched it in their childhood and prefer to keep up with the changing generations. The fandom is what really makes the show more noticeable. With all the fan art, music remixes, and mini shows on websites such as Youtube, the fans grow more and more each day!
Willing to get a taste of it?
Try watching the first 3 or 4 episodes and see if you like it. I’m pretty sure you’ll be surprised. The problems and/or villains(yes, villains) of each episode keep you on your toes with anticipation and lead you to watch more and more episodes without even realizing it. Before you know it, you’ll secretly be a brony/pegasister. Its not something to be ashamed of. As manly or as mature you may be, there’s still that little kid inside and you know it. Let it out and be proud about it.
The characters are endless but its up to you to take it to the next step. I’m a brony myself and I’m sure there are plenty other bronies and pegasisters hidden within this very school. Brohoof (fistbump) them.
