You always hear that New York City is the city that never sleeps, but what makes it the great city it is?. There are businesses, stores, museums, art galleries , theaters, parks, restaurants, and people from all over the world. Hey, we have some of that here in Peekskill too, but is Peekskill a real city? What’s your opinion? The following opinions were expressed by two of our Mercury staff after a recent afternoon tour through downtown Peekskill. We want to know what you think. Please leave a comment.
In my opinion, I do not think Peekskill is like a real city because it’s so small. You hardly see anybody outside, but in Manhattan there are people everywhere since it’s so big and people are going to different places all over the city. Also in a city, most stores would be open on the weekdays, but most stores you try to go to here, like on a Monday for instance, would be closed. This is why I believe Peekskill is not a real city. When you think of New York City, what do you think of? Big city, flashing lights, the Empire State, the Big Apple, always on the go, the city that never sleeps! When you think of downtown Peekskill, what do you thing of? I wouldn’t think much of it, nothing like NYC since Peekskill is a small town, but when I actually walked around downtown Peekskill, I saw a lot of cars, lots of stores, and heard a lot of different noises, reminding me of New York City. That’s why I think that Peekskill is somewhat like New York City. Many will disagree with me, saying that Peekskill is boring and small, while NYC is exciting and huge. In a way, I agree with those who disagree with me. Peekskill does sleep, while NYC is always active. Also, since I wandered downtown Peekskill on a Monday, when many places were closed, and in NYC, almost everything is open 24/7. But if you go downtown on a Friday or a Saturday, when the weekend has begun, it is more like NYC because basically everything will be open. Joanie De Muro (Class of 2014)
