(Reprinted from last year)
On Monday, school is closed in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Will this be just another day off for you or will you take some time to think about the man and his mission? Last Fall, my family and I traveled to Memphis and visited the National Civil Rights Museum. As we made our way through the exhibits, we experienced African American History chronologically. We saw displays on the slave trade and Harriet Tubman. We sat on a replica of the bus Rosa Parks rode on. We wound our way further into the museum totally absorbed with reading the walls and following the works of Dr. King, until we came to the end of a ramp and found ourselves on the balcony where Dr. King was standing w
hen he was killed. Everything stopped for me then. Looking at his motel room (the museum is attached to the Lorraine Motel where Dr. King was assassinated) the spirit of this great man's life came into focus for me. In that moment, I felt a new appreciation, on an emotional level, for everything Dr. King was trying to accomplish.
This Monday take some time to appreciate Dr. King's work. Read about him online. Watch a video of one of his famous speeches, or at least take some time to reflect upon his “Dream”.
