A piece of twisted steel from the Twin Towers sits on the ground. The large flag is at half mast. The statue of our hometown hero, Firefighter Sam Oitice, gazes out at the river. The bell in the tower rings to commemorate the times when the planes hit the World Trade Center buildings nine years ago. On Saturday, City of Peekskill Officials led the community in a remembrance service at Riverfront Green Park. It was a solemn occasion, but also an occasion for hope. President Obama asked that we commemorate September 11th by giving service to our community. The call to service and of coming together as a community are ideas that are important for high school students to embrace. They are important ideas for the future of our country.
