Veteran’s Day Observance at Monument Park Includes Peekskill High School Marching Band
PEEKSKILL….Sixty Peekskill High School students in the PHS Marching Band joined veterans and community members on November 11, 2010 to observe Veteran’s Day ceremonies. Directed by Peekskill music teachers John Hahn and Dave Thomas, the Marching Band played the anthems of each branch of the Armed Services, as well as the “Star Spangle Banner” and “It’s a Grand Old Flag.” Attending the ceremonies on a bright but chilly morning were veterans of the World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the two Iraq Wars, and the war in Afghanistan, as well as Peekskill Mayor Mary Foster, members of the City Council, clergy, and area dignitaries, including recently re-elected Assemblywoman Sandy Galef and Westchester County Legislator John Testa. The keynote speaker was Dr. John McGurty, Captain, U.S. Navy Reserve Medical Corps. A moment of silence was held at 11 a.m. to mark the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, in honor of the signing of the peace treaty at Versailles that ended World War I. Following the observances, the Peekskill High School Band members joined veterans for lunch at the American Legion
